Is Self Obsession often mistaken for Individualism?

Both are different concepts and I've personally not come across self-obsessed individuals who believe they are displaying individualism. Its a well known fact that western culture is largely individualistic and low in context, but that doesnt automatically qualify them as self obsessed people.
