Can you shed some light on the paradox I seem to find with men and engagement rings?

It seems like some men are simultaneously repulsed by the idea that a woman might want an expensive engagement ring and compelled to want to give an expensive one as a sign of his wealth, power, or the implicit "value" of his fiancee (if you will). What emotion tends to win out if he is indeed having this conflict?
