Severe gas pain causing sore muscles?

I recently had very severe gas pain where I was unable to p gas very much by burping or farting. I think it was something I ate, but I now notice I am very sore on the side of my belly. I can feel it if I turn a certain way or apply pressure to it. It is very sore. What would cause this and is it normal?
