How do i know if he wants me back or just wants to be my friend?

Ok the only advice I can give you is to as yourself do you want him back? Think of the reason you two broke up do you want to be thinking will it happen again. The only way to know is to know if he wants you back is to ask him in person but before you do think about the first two things i said first. I cant answer this for you only your heart can but before you rush into something think about it.
